A Taste of the Trends

If there is one thing you can be sure of, trends never stand still. We asked the experts to give us a taste of what’s trending for 2018. MAXIMALISM
Forget minimalism and its constraints. Make a move towards maximalism — one of the hottest styles in interior design.
A blend of historical design and colours, layers and textures, and mixed artwork allows the maximalist to create an interior that not only melds the patina of time with contemporary decor, but creates an interior that is vastly unique.
“Maximalism allows you to let your imagination loose,” Rebecca Long, Resene Colour Expert, says. “The key here is to connect the dots and play close attention to design elements, such as repetition and shape, to build
your scheme.”

Experience the chic interior design of the Regent Hotel in Singapore

Classic style and exceptional drinking and dining options in the heart of Singapore’s commercial district

Soaring style

With interiors by neofuturistic architect John Portman, the Regent Singapore offers classic glamour close to the western end of Orchard Road, the city-state’s famed shopping strip. The lobby is based around four Art Deco ‘bubble’ lifts that ferry guests from the first floor to the 12th. And then there’s the centrepiece, the giant “Singapore Shower” by Japanese sculptor Michio Ihara, which hangs from the ninth floor to the second and comes to life in mid-afternoon when the sun streams in to illuminate the work, casting a golden shimmer across the property’s interior. The hotel itself is a towering atrium arranged in tiers with an almost pyramid-like effect, while each floor’s corridors are left open to provide views from on high of the water features and swirling staircases below.

Inside the 2018 Kips Bay Decorator Show House

“The Moonlight Room” by Juan Montoya Design. Photography by Nickolas Sargent.
Each year, celebrated designers transform a luxury Manhattan residence into the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, an elaborate exhibition of fine furnishings, art, and technology. This year’s iteration, open May 1-31, is no different. Designers went all out: Juan Montoya Design evokes the cosmos via abstract silhouettes of the moon in both carpeting and wall covering, while Barbara Ostrom Associates transports guests to an avid art collector’s library, crowned by a ceiling inspired by Frank Stella paintings. This year’s pièce de résistance, however, is the grand staircase, Sasha Bikoff’s technicolor ode to past, present, and future. Memphis Milano designers Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini influenced Bikoff, who included colorful pieces by Chris Schanck and Misha Kahn. It’s a feast for the eyes—and Instagram. Design element: Spheres in interior design

When I was in Southern California this summer, I stumbled upon a wonderful interior design studio with a store attached, and this store had the most amazing selection of rocks and minerals for sale (for use as accessories).   The stone spheres in particular caught my eye – I love the shape, and they had a huge array of colors and sizes.

Since that visit, I have been collecting pictures of spheres that I noticed on Pinterest or in my old interior design image files. I was surprised to note that some of my favorite room images from the past have spheres used as accessories – I had not even noticed!

Here is a good example. This picture has been on my blog countless times. Something about this room has always had great appeal to me – the combination of the sand color of the sisal, the grays of the wall and upholstery, the contemporary art, and the white tulips (my favorite) – it all comes together beautifully. When I looked at this picture with fresh eyes, I spotted the spheres on the side table – one large, and three small. The small ones could be mounted finials. Interior design by Gerrie Bremermann.

For many homeowners their favorite animals are from mascots of their favorite athletic team, or from childhood memories of your family pet, animals in three-dimensional forms or even in printed wall art are wonderful ways to bring in your animals into your home decor.
